Motor insurance can be purchased for cars, motorbikes, trucks and other motor vehicles. It is mainly used to provide protection against losses that may result from motor accidents.
By purchasing auto insurance, the consumer may be protected against the following depending upon the type of cover on the policy
Liability insurance covers only the last point (shown above), while comprehensive insurance covers all three of the above.
In some countries it is compulsory to purchase motor insurance before driving (on public roads). This is so that third parties are protected against loss, damage or injury caused by a vehicle. Usually, cover against loss of or damage to a driver's own vehicle is optional.
