A work accident can be defined as an sudden, external, unintended, unexpected and violent event, during or arising because of the execution of work, which causes damage to the health or loss of the life of the employee (the individual insured).
For the qualification as an accident at work, there must be seen to be a causal relationship between the event and the work itself. Only if an accident is due to "wilful misrepresentation" on the part of an employer or the employer's appointed representative is the employer under an obligation to compensate the victim for the accident.
Workers compensation laws and programs exist to protect employees who are injured whilst on the job. Additionally, there can often be benefits available to dependents of workers who are killed on the job.
